"Washing Ropes" posted on: Thursday, October 29, 2009 by: dfish

It has been really muddy here after all the rain in Texas and my ropes are a mess. Does anyone know if there is a benefit (besides the obvious!)or a problem with rinsing off a rope (esp. 100% nylon).

Yes it is true that a while back the string that has been used for years to manufacture ropes was discontinued by the manufacturing company. All rope companies were forced to search for new products. I think it goes without saying that the situation has been remieied. As many of you know there was very little change in the finished product that has been produced. The manufacturing companies have been adjusting to the new product. There is no good solid evidence that the new string produces ropes that "kink" more. There are some differneces but for the most part the rope companies have been the ones that have adjusted not the ropers.

Naturaly most stores are going to be more likely to carry the Classic, Cactus and PC ropes than any others. These are the three main rope companies and MANY more ropers use their ropes than any other brands. If you are having a problem with ropes figure getting figure 8's it is most likely due to cold weather. That is what happens to ropes that are made to be used in the warm weather but it is cool when you are using them. If you read the article on the home page of this website by Craig Bray it helps make more sense out of why ropes change with the temperature. Heat causes ropes to have more "kick" (keeps your loop open when you swing), cold causes them to have less. Rope companies tie the ropes differently as the seasons change to help compensate for that but if a rope is made in the summer & is being used in the winter that is common.

Hope this helps some.

I use a Hard medium bonus, when I started a Med Soft felt good. It seems to me that the more I catch, the harder the jerks, the softer my ropes become. Has anyone else experienced this??? I understand hope ropes are effected by environment, but hope much is a rope effected by use?? Does a rope develop a memory wether it be good or bad??

I was informed by a PRCA team roper that a couple years back Dupont stopped manufacturing the nylon that was used in a majority of ropes. The rope manufacturers then had to scramble to find new nylon suppliers and the majority of the nylon used now-a-days "kinks" easier then the stuff Dupont use to supply. Any info out there??? I usually heel with a Professional's Choice 35' MS Predator, unless it's cold out, then I switch to a Bonus. I would like to try other ropes that I see advertised, but the stores do not carry much more then Pro-Choice, Classics, and Callaways. I can't seem to "feel the tip" of a Classic as well as a Predator or Callaway and a Classic figure 8's easier on me. Has anyone used a Coastal, which is advertised in Super-Looper? How are they compared to the majors?
Thanks and good luck on your next draw.
