Ask the Flagger - August 2009

Philip,

Hello, I was at the 2009 “All Ladies Roping” in Reno, Nevada. The 9th team call back, in the short round, the heeler had her rope caught in the roping box and she was flagged out. I want to know why? Since this was interference on the facilities part. I felt she should have had a rerun due to it not being her fault and this type of roping. Can you please explain and you did a great job of flagging at all the Roping’s.

Thanks - Ariel

Ariel,

The reason she didn’t get a rerun is because, the chute is a stationary object. The box is considered a part of the arena. In other words, it is a part of the arena, if it is a part of the arena, no reruns can or will be granted.

The roper initiated the action by having her rope come into contact with a stationary object. The stationary object remains the same for all the ropers and is not considered an obstacle that can create a foul.

If it had been a rope barrier or a moving component of the chute, that fouled the roper, a rerun could have been granted. Hope this answers your question
