A New Spin on Team Roping

Team roping at all levels has become extremely competitive over the years. As more people improve their skills, it is only natural that winning becomes more difficult. Consequently some friends and I have come up with a totally new spin on an ageless concept that really excites me, “Head to Head” match competition.

Every team roper wants to compete for bigger payoffs. Using the “jackpot” thinking of today, large prize money calls for large roping productions. At large productions, most of your time is spent waiting to compete. Facilities capable of running large productions mean more travel and overnight expenses. When you add the fact that there are more teams to compete against, you can understand some of the reasons you may be spending more and competing less.

Using a sixty-four-team “head to head” format, each team will compete in a “One-on-One” three-head match against one other team. The winner of that match will progress to another “One-on-One” match at the next level of the tournament. Winning four of these matches will advance a team to the “Money Round”. In the “Money Round”, four teams will compete in a four-steer average for the big money. Using this format, you only have to beat 7 teams for the tournament win and $50,000.

We have been “fine tuning” this concept at Circle T Arena in Hamilton, Texas. The response has been overwhelming for the #14 and #11 tournaments. We all know how difficult it can be to compete against and beat sixty-three teams. This concept is more like football or baseball. One team competes against another, one match at a time.

We are scheduling a roping at Lone Star Arena in Stephenville, Texas, October 8 – 10, where there will be an Open, #15 and #11. This will be followed by our next roping at the Circle T Arena in Hamilton, Texas, November 20 - 22. For more information, visit our website at www.ropingmatch.com.

This concept will change the way roper’s compete. Consistency will become more important than sheer speed. This will make the competition more enjoyable and fun to watch. How long has it been since you actually enjoyed watching team roping jackpots?

Few people have had the opportunity to “match” rope. Several factors have deterred producers from attempting this format in the past. Cattle needed, time, and the number of runs per team to name a few. We have found a way to eliminate these concerns.

On December 14th the team roping world will be treated to the Speed Williams Invitational Match Roping. Produced by The World Series of Team Roping, this inaugural event will be held at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Plan to attend the official kick off of a new era in our sport.

An all-star 64-team line up will each put up $5000 to compete for a total purse of over $250,000. With $50,000 guaranteed to the winning team, as well as significant consolation and “round” monies, this promises to be the “can’t miss” event of the year.
