Ask the Flagger

Philip,

We were at a roping last week end and watched a Tie-on roper dally over his horn knot. Is this legal or are there rules stating otherwise?

Garrett,

No, this is not legal. You need to designate wither you are going to tie-on or dally. However, just because you meet the age criteria and classification does not mean you have to tie-on.
USTRC 8.4 Tie-on Rule
Any heeler 60 years or older may tie-on regardless of classification number. Any heeler with a classification of TRIAD 6 or less will be permitted to tie-on as of their 55th birthday. Ladies who heel may tie-on. Under no circumstances will any header be permitted to tie-on. Children12 years or younger may NOT tie-on. It is illegal to dally over the top of a tied on rope or tie-on device, the results is an automatic disqualification…
There are exceptions of age and classification requirements at certain designated Team Roping’s.

Headers should be aware of wither they’re heelers are tying on or dallying. To prevent an unsafe condition for they’re Heelers, Headers should not release their steer before the run is over and the team has received a flag, and before the heeler has released their tie-on device. Thanks for the question Garrett.

Have Fun and Enjoy Roping
