Ask the Flagger

Philip,

If the header ropes the steer and turns it, then loses his dallies, the steer is on a loose rope headed to the catch pen and the heeler ropes the steer, then the header redallies and stretches the steer, is it a qualified run, or does the steer have to be in tow when the heeler ropes?

Chris Hester

Chris,

The header must have control of the steers head and the steers head must be bent before the heeler can legally deliver his or her rope. Before the Heeler can throw, the header must go through the legal procedures to turn the steer again. The rope must be dallied and under control of the header. This ruling pertains to all USTRC Roping’s and where USTRC rules are used and enforced.

I have seen this Flagged as a legal run, but in my opinion I do not see this as a legal run. Ropers need to be aware of the rules of the roping or rodeo association that they are participating in. Hope this answers your question.

Have fun and enjoy roping
