Ask the Flagger - #3

Ask the Flagger

Philip,

I was flagging a Team roping event; 10 head for $100.00 per roper. The header roped the steer, both horns and the roped entered through the steers mouth. The header pulled the slack and turned to the left and the heeler roped both heels and stopped. The header then turned and ‘faced up’, asking for time. I observed that the rope was still through the steers’ mouth and I flagged “No Time”. The reason I flagged the team out, I told them there were three legal catches; 2 horns, half a head, or a neck catch. Was I right in flagging the team out, “No Time”?

Arlen,

Yes it was the right call. However, you should have stopped the run immediately, because this was an inhumane catch, and constitutes a “No Time”. The Flagger must always be in the correct position to see any particular catch.
USTRC Rules Section 8.2
There are only three legal catches: 1- Around both horns; 2 – Half a head; and 3 – Around the neck... ALL BRIDLE CATCHES ARE CONSIDERED ILLEGAL!

Hope this answers your question.
Have Fun and Enjoy Roping
