Ask the Flagger

Philip,

At a Roping, the header roped the steer & figured eighted the horns. He then rode up and fished the figure eight off the steers head. The rope did not come tight till the steer was in tow with a legal head catch. The Heeler roped two feet. Should they have got a time?

Tim,

Yes! The run is legal till the run is completed (no matter if it is a good head catch or a bad head catch). When the flag is dropped, the flagger will then inspect the head catch to determine if it is legal or not.

A header may fish using the slack of their rope, but can not reach down and physically touch the loop to alter the catch. At that time, if the header did physically touch the loop, this would automatically become a no-time.

Bear in mind, if the header legally turns the steer and still has a bad head catch after the heeler has roped the steer, and continues to stretch or apply excessive force to the steer, and not face when he should face, then this would result in a no-time or disqualification because of excessive force. Hope this answers your question.

Have Fun and Enjoy Roping
