Ask the Flagger

Philip,

The other weekend my buddies and I went to a local jackpot and I would say about 50%of the steers would drag as soon as the headers would take their Dally’s, no matter how smooth they were to handle their steers. In the short go a steer started dragging on a team and the flagger gave them a re-run stating the steer didn’t give them a good chance to be heeled. Most of the ropers complained about the re-run and despite all the complaints the flagger stated it was his decision and it was final. Needless to say that team roped again and won the roping. Now my question is; “was it fair to give that team a re-run even though other teams were able to get their times on their dragging steers”?

Cesar,

Your question is: “Was it fair to give that team a rerun?” Fairness and consistency is what you should expect from any Team Roping Flagger. Calls should be enforced consistently through out all the rounds, and the short round. This sounds like a Sunday afternoon jackpot roping. It is your choice of where you spend your Team Roping Dollars. However, you are more aped to see these situations at a lower entry fee event. Every decision by the Flagger is a judgment call. The Flagger gave that particular team a rerun. That was the call of the Flagger that part of your entry fee, went to pay for. Weather you agree or disagree with the Flagger is your choice. We need to respect their decisions weather it’s the Flagger, the referee at a football game, or the line judge at a tennis match. Live with the decision and move on to the next event.
