Ask the Flagger

Philip,

If you are eligible to Tie-on and you do tie-on (for one run), can you legally dally on your next run? Is there any rule that say’s you can not dally on one steer and then dally on the next steer, all in the same roping?

Lloyd South
Texas

Lloyd,

Yes you can be tied-on for one run and then dally on your next run. However, you can not be tied-on and dally over the horn knot in the same run.

USTRC Section 8:4
Tie on rule- Any heeler 60 years or older may tie on regardless of classification. Any heeler with a classification of Triad 6 or less will be permitted to tie on as of their 55th birthday…
It is illegal to dally over the top of a tied on rope or tie on device, the result is an automatic disqualification. Furthermore, should a tied on rope inadvertently come loose from the saddle horn or otherwise become detached during the course of a run, the team will be disqualified. In other words, the roper may not reattach his/her rope or dally with a loose tied on rope...

We are right back to: “Know the rules of the roping you are participating in”. There are some Roping’s & and some Organization’s that do not allow ropers to tie-on. I encourage all ropers, as a member of any organization, to “Keep up to date” with the current rule changes. Hope this answers your question Lloyd.
