Ask the Flagger - April 2009

Philip,

My name is Reed Hunt and I was at the 2009 Mike Cervi jr. Memorial Roping, in Tucson, Arizona. You were flagging this roping and my question involves my Favorite Roper and Hero, Jake Barnes.

My question comes from the short round of this roping; Jake called for the steer and the steer moves left and comes passed the electric steer eye. After the steer crosses the steer eye, Jake is coming left out of the box and runs over the steer eye, Jake pulls up! Then Jake and his partner, without talking to you, turned and rode out of the arena

Why did you flag them out and what was the reason for doing it?

Reed Hunt

Reed,

The electric eye is a stationary object of the arena, but if the roper runs over the electric eye it does not constitute a rerun, because it is a fixed object.

At this roping there is a 25’ head barrier and a 25’ box. *note: (The right hand side of the Heel box is the right hand side of the arena). There is no heel barrier for the heeler. Therefore the heeler may have got out early, pushing the steer to the left.

When the steer broke left across the score line he released the barrier and started the timer. As long as the steer passes between the electric steer eyes’s, on the score line, that steer is legal to be roped.

When Jake broke left, leaving the Headers box, he ran over the steer eye. Jake could have gone ahead and competed on that steer, because the steer had started the timer. However, when they showed me they did not want to compete on that steer, by Jake and his partner pulling up and riding out of the arena, I flagged them out. Jake and his partner did not question my call.Reed, glad you are looking out for your Favorite Roper and Hero, and I hope this answers your question.
