Ask the Flagger - October 2009

Philip,

I was at a roping; my header called for the steer and roped it. He turned it and I double hocked it. The Flagger said it was a ‘no time’, because it was an illegal head catch. My header said it was a legal head catch. The guy that was taking off the ropes called him and said it was legal. The Flagger said he made the call,” I can’t change it.” Is he right about not changing the call?

Samuel

Samuel,

First off the Flaggers must always place themselves in a position to see the entire run. Secondly, the team, having been made aware they had been flagged out for an illegal head catch, should have held the steer for themselves and the Flagger to re-inspect. The head catch itself could have been illegal and during the run down to the catch pen became legal. Before the steer is taken to the stripping chute, the team and the flagger must be satisfied with the call. The stripping chute operator may have seen a legal head catch. However, the chute help is not asked to make flagging calls. Outside opinions should never be allowed to determine the call of the Flagger. Your question was “Is he right not changing his Call?” Yes, the Flagger was right in not changing his call. Hope this answers your question.
