Clear my mind, clear my thoughts, and just rope!

Practicing for the NFR is really nothing to different. It’s been pretty amazing having the feelings of the biggest event of my team roping career so far coming up and being able to look forward to it in a few weeks, but the preparation for it is still the same as how I would prepare for any other event.

Sure the National Finals Rodeo is a dream come true for me, and yeah, it is the biggest event in rodeo I have ever competed at, but you can’t let all the hype get into your head. Through practicing, preparing, and getting advice from some veteran friends of mine like Clay Tryan and Jade Corkill, I have seen that it really is just another rodeo, like any other rodeo we have been to all year long. It is 10 days of action packed, full on, busy schedule days, but when we back in the box, it still boils down to who can rope their steer they have drawn the fastest. Nothing else matters when it’s your turn to nod. So as I prepare for this prestigious event, I am reminded of my perspectives on life. I realize more and more lately what really matters to me and what roping really is in my life. Roping is my passion. Roping is my job. I love what I do, but it will never take precedence over other priorities in my life. Putting the NFR into perspective makes it way easier to prepare for and takes a lot of the nerves out of the way. When I realize that I have nothing to lose and everything to gain at my first appearance at the NFR, that makes life so much easier. When I think more of other people and my family than I do myself and roping, that makes my life so much easier. Keeping roping in the right perspective helps keep me in a clear mindset and focus on what my goals are in life, not just roping. Thank God for reality checks and clear vision. DH
